Build a small world around one ordinary action.

Choose an imaginary place and a routine someone wants to complete. Let the details grow from the relationships that action reveals.

01

Choose the ordinary action

Name something a person in the setting needs to do: cross a boundary, repair an object, exchange information, or reach a meeting.

List the immediate places and conditions involved. Keep the first version small enough to examine in a single scene.

02

Introduce one rule

Give the action a condition that makes the place distinctive. Ask who maintains the rule, who benefits from it, and what practical effect it has.

Avoid explaining an entire history before the rule has a visible consequence. A concrete effect gives later background a reason to exist.

03

Connect the surrounding details

Follow one dependence from the rule to a place, an object, and another person’s aim. Record the connection in plain language.

Distinguish a detail the scene establishes from a possibility you are still exploring. Keep changes traceable as the setting develops.

04

Change the condition

Alter one familiar part of the routine and write what becomes difficult or newly possible. Let the scene reveal the world through action.

Review whether the rule supports the story. Keep the consequence, revise the rule, or leave a purposeful uncertainty for another scene.
